Lower Division
Students will:
- Identify access points (ex. web site, staff, etc.) to information about UT Arlington Library in order to locate library policies and/or services.
- Recognize the ethical reasons for attributing information sources in order to avoid plagiarism.
- Differentiate between the content indexed in a library catalog, a library database, and the free web in order to select a research tool which will retrieve desired resources.
- Decipher a database record in order to locate materials through UT Arlington Library.
- Retrieve items from their physical location in order to access information on their topic.
- Critically evaluate information sources in order to select those appropriate to their information need.
- Construct basic search strategies in order to retrieve accurate and relevant materials.
- Identify, locate, and arrange necessary publication information in order to accurately cite a source using the required format.
Upper Division
Students will:
- Select and use discipline specific resources and know how to contact their subject librarian in order to find information on their topics.
- Utilize retrieval services in order to obtain materials not owned by UT Arlington Library.
- Create and execute advanced search strategies in order to find information on their topics.
- Interpret and analyze elements of citations in order to locate that piece of information.
- Construct bibliographies and in-text references using discipline appropriate styles in order to correctly attribute others' work and ideas.
- Recognize the cycle of information in their discipline in order to find research at varying levels of publication.
- Identify the ethical and legal issues surrounding information in order to comply with copyright, licensing, fair use, and intellectual property laws, regulations, and institutional policies.
Graduate Division
Students will:
- Select and use discipline specific resources and know how to contact their subject librarian in order to find information on their topics.
- Students will select and use advanced, specialized resources in order to find information on their topic.
- Students will recognize the norms for publication in their discipline in order to have their work accepted by the scholarly community.
- Students will create and execute advanced search strategies in order to find information on their topics.
- Students will execute a cited reference search in order to be aware of others doing similar research and/or trace a publication/concept through time.
- Students will employ copyright and fair use guidelines in order to ethically use information.
